What is The Sedgefield Learning Box?
The Sedgefield Learning Box describes an approach to developing effective and independent learners at Sedgefield Community College. Possibly the best way of understanding what it is all about is to think about a metaphorical box into which a range of 'learning tools' are placed. Students and staff become skilled at using these 'learning tools' during their time at the school and this ensures more effective learning. There are four compartments in our Learning Box and these are: Communicating Learning; Learning to Think; Learning Habits and Learning Together.
As a school, we have looked carefully at the wide range of excellent and innovative practice that is taking place in other schools and beyond. As a school, we have identified our own approach to taking this theory about learning and then making it happen in our school and then beyond! Through this process, we have identified The University of Exeter as a key partner who have helped us to develop our Learning Box approach and from whom we received the prestigious Thinking School accreditation in June 2012. In summer 2015, the school was successful in achieving Advanced Thinking School accreditation, becoming one of only of only a handful of schools in the country to have achieved this award.
The picture on the left shows 'The Three Storey Intellect'. Every window in this building is linked to a 'learning word', that describes the learning processes that take place within our school. We all use the same language to talk about learning and this helps us to ensure a common understanding about what learning actually means. If you look closely, you might notice one or two animals / people / objects on the building that relate to some of the other 'learning tools' that we use. More details about all of these can be found on the other pages of the website.
